SUMMER INTERNSHIPS

2017 Summer Zookeeper Internship:

The Cape May County Zoo will be accepting applications for its 2017 Summer Zookeeper Intern Program. Applicants accepted in the program will gain experience working with exotic zoo animals.

Interns will shadow a zookeeper and rotate through each area of the zoo. Interns will learn about basic husbandry, diets, exhibit design and repair, medical care, and more.
Each intern will design and complete an approved project of their choosing. The interns will spend one day per week at an animal interpretation station in the Zoo.

The program is an unpaid educational internship and preference will be given to science majors enrolled in a Bachelor Degree program.
The program is scheduled to run from May 29th 2016 – July 7th 2017. The hours will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday; however, times and days are flexible.

Working in a zoo can be a physical job, please be sure that you are capable of doing this type of work.
Preference will be given to applicants from Cape May County. This is an unpaid, educational internship.

2017 Enrichment and Training Internship:

The Cape May County Zoo is accepting applications from motivated individuals who are looking to gain experience with the enrichment and training of zoo animals.

The intern will work directly with the Training and Enrichment Coordinators and Animal Keepers to learn the principles of animal training and enrichment through observation, research, and hands-on work with the animals.

Applicants should be able to work independently and be comfortable speaking in front of zoo guests. The applicant will be doing a variety of tasks assigned by the Enrichment and Training Coordinators, including data entry, constructing enrichment, training zoo animal(s), watching and recording Animal Keeper training sessions, and providing positive experiences for the zoo guests through interpretation.

Qualifications: Preference will be given to applicants in a Bachelors Degree program with a major in Biology, Zoology, Animal Behavior, Psychology, or a related field.

This will be an unpaid internship. The intern will work 9:00am-4:00pm on Thursday, Fridays, and Saturdays. This internship typically runs June 1st-mid-August. Housing is not provided and this area can be expensive to live in, so please keep that in mind before applying.

2017 Education Department Internship:

The Cape May County Zoo will accept applications from motivated individuals who are looking to gain experience in Education within the zoo. The intern will work directly with the Education Department and Animal Keepers to help organize and execute Summer Zoo Camp, as well as public zoo tours and other programs. Hands-on work with the education animals will also be required.

Applicants should be able to work independently and be comfortable speaking with zoo guests of all ages.  Working in a zoo can be a very physical job, please be sure that you are capable of doing this type of work.

The applicant will be completing a variety of tasks assigned by the Education Department including but not limited to:  creating lesson plans for Zoo Camp, assisting with Summer Zoo Camp, tours, birthday parties, and special events, research new themes and ideas for tours and camps, Provide positive experiences with the zoo guests during programs, Some animal husbandry/assisting keepers with animal care, Data entry and analysis.

Please be aware that Cape May County is a seasonal resort area and housing can be costly. If you are applying from outside the County, please take this into consideration.

Preference will be given to applicants enrolled in a Bachelors Degree program with a major in Education, Animal Behavior, Psychology, Zoology or a related field. This will be an unpaid educational internship. The intern will work from 9:00am-2:00pm Tuesday-Thursday.  This internship will run from May 30th until mid-August.  Days and times are flexible.
